Cobourg, ON – June 25, 2018 – Northumberland’s thriving entrepreneurial community will be in the spotlight again when local youth entrepreneurs gather to showcase their products and services at the third annual ‘trade-show’ style event for the Summer Company Program. Organized by the Business & Entrepreneurship Centre Northumberland (BECN), the event will be hosted by Staples, Cobourg on Wednesday, July 4th. It will feature the nine successful entrepreneurs who have been selected by the BECN to receive mentorship and funding through the program this summer in order to realize their business goals.

“The Summer Company Program focuses on providing youth entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge they need to fuel their entrepreneurial energy,” states BECN Manager Rob Day. “These students have displayed a passion for their business through their extensive evaluations of their selected market and their well-defined business plans. BECN is happy to be able to assist in transforming this passion into the professional programs and services the students are offering our community this summer.”

The Summer Company program is funded by the Government of Ontario and managed in Northumberland by the BECN. Each year, students between the ages of 15 and 29 are invited to submit a detailed business plan to the Summer Company Program. If selected, they may receive up to $3,000 in grants. Products and services offered by this year’s selected businesses include fresh produce, cleaning services, a stationary chip truck, a hockey camp for young players and more.

"In Canada, small businesses account for the employment of over 70 per cent of the private labour force, making them a key contributor to our community’s vitality and sustainability,” indicates County Warden Mark Lovshin. “It is important that we support local businesses and the youth that will become our next generation of small business owners. We encourage everyone to come out to this showcase event and discover what these young, innovative individuals have to offer our community.”

Since 2016, Staples stores across Ontario have supported the Summer Company Program by showcasing youth entrepreneurs and their businesses. The nine  successful candidates from Northumberland will be featured on Wednesday, July 4th at the Cobourg Staples location at 1025 Elgin Street West, from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
